Diplomas on Demand® Considerations
The Diplomas on Demand® Desktop Publishing System from SCRIP-SAFE® provides a convenient and inexpensive way to print diplomas in your office. Before you consider this alternative, it’s important that you understand what you gain:
- Control and coordination of the diploma printing and distribution process
- Immediate service to alumni who need a replacement or an additional diploma
- Significant monetary savings
Diplomas on Demand® is sold as a non-network version. However, the software may be networked; but it limits our ability to provide you with on-going technical support.
To make your dream of printing only the diplomas you need at the time you need them, you must have the following capabilities:
Computer: Virtually any name brand computer purchased in the last two years will meet or exceed minimum requirements. However, the more powerful the computer, the quicker the processing time and the faster the diplomas will be printed by your laser printer.
- IBM compatible processor with a Pentium III with at least 100MB of RAM and Access 2000
- Ability to import data from Excel or CSV file to Diplomas on Demand® software
- Hard drive with at least 100 MB of free space
- Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, or XP operating system
- CD-ROM or 3.5 floppy disk drive
- Windows compatible pointing (mouse) device
Laser Printer: Virtually any name brand laser printer purchased in the last two years will meet and exceed minimum printing requirements. HP, Lexmark, Xerox, Xante, etc. are all excellent choices.
- Windows compatible laser printer with at least 16MB of RAM
- Minimum print capability of 600 X 600 dpi (dots per inch)
- Straight path feeding for heavier weight diploma papers
- Oversized diploma printing requires a printer that offers a 14 X 11 (or more) print option
Diploma Paper Options: Custom printed diploma stock is provided by SCRIP-SAFE® for use with the Diplomas on Demand® software.
Weight: Paperweight is a subjective issue. While heavier diploma paper may “feel” better, it may not go through your printer without jamming. Some laser printers are designed to handle heavier weight papers. Standard diploma paperweights for desktop printing are 80, 90, and 100-pound text. These paperweights will work with all printers and can be fed through the standard paper tray. The heavier 65-pound cover stock may require manual feeding or use of the straight path feeding option unless you have a laser printer designed to accommodate this weight.
Paper Color: Paper colors are subjective and often tied to tradition. While the most popular paper color is Ivory or Old White, other papers may produce a more dramatic effect. Achieving a maximum contrast between the paper and the foil seal should be an aesthetic priority. Gold foil and Ivory paper complement rather than contrast. SCRIP-SAFE® maintains a selection of suitable archival quality papers for your choice.
Foil Colors: While gold is one of the most popular foil colors, by itself it does not provide a visually distinctive impression. However, when combined with a second color, the gold provides a distinctive visual enhancement. A two color foil seal along with the black printing of the diploma information provides a high quality impression. To avoid melting during laser printing, foil must be heat resistant. Therefore, not all color tones are available in heat resistant foils.
Diplomas on Demand® Software: All software is custom programmed so that graduate name, degree, honors, major, authorizing signatures, date of ceremony and name of institution are ready to be laser printed onto your custom diploma paper. Other features included:
- Data can be imported or entered manually
- Software archives all authorizing diploma signatures by term for convenient printing of replacement diplomas
- Diploma printing can be by graduation group or by single diploma
- All data can be proofed on screen before printing
- Mailing labels can be created
